Catalogue of Southern Double Stars

(1955 catalog with multiple star systems and non-orbiting double stars)

The Catalogue of Southern Double Stars was published in 1955 by Richard Alfred Rossiter. It contains 8065 double stars, some of which are binary stars (and larger multiples), some others not actually orbiting, and some including some of each.

Note that there is an ambiguity regarding the use of the survey-based designator "RST": a double star designator "RST" is commonly used for Rossiter's own 5000+ discoveries, with numberings specific to his own list of discoveries. This catalog lists these stars and their designations, and analogously lists the discoveries of other astronomers with their own double star designation prefixes and numberings. However, the catalog also includes an additional incompatible numbering covering its entries and the abbreviation RST is sometimes explained as indicating this catalog rather than indicating Rossiter's own discoveries. To illustrate the issue, the catalog's entry number 4 is not the same star as Rossiter's own discovery number 4.
