(process by which neutrons are freed in the s process)

Neutrons from carbon-13 (13C) are freed through this fusion step:

13    4      16
  C +  He ->   O + n
 6    2       8

This is one of the sources of free neutrons used by the s-process in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars.
