LINER
(low-ionization nuclear emission-line region)
(galaxy nucleus emitting spectral lines for ionized and neutral atoms)
A LINER
(for low-ionization nuclear emission-line region)
refers to a galaxy nucleus with certain emission lines,
and such a galaxy is called a LINER galaxy
(aka a Type 3 Seyfert galaxy).
Emission lines include neutral oxygen, singly-ionized
oxygen, nitrogen, and sodium, but
no more than weak lines of singly-ionized helium
or doubly ionized oxygen or nitrogen.
More than one theory exists to explain the underlying cause
of the lines:
LINER galaxies are common and often something other than
grand design spiral galaxies.
