A Lyman-alpha emitter (LAE or Lyman-alpha emitting galaxy) is a galaxy detected via an emission line interpreted as a redshifted Lyman alpha, the first spectral line of the Lyman series. Given the confidence that the observed line is Lyman alpha, the redshift is:

The prominent Lyman-alpha line is assumed to be evidence of star formation. Surveys identifying such galaxies reveal the star formation history of the universe, and the resulting catalogs are taken as samples for the study of star-forming galaxies at the times indicated by the redshifts.
