The term intergalactic dust refers to dust outside of galaxies. There are signs of dust clouds just outside galaxies (including the Milky Way) within and around galaxy clusters, and elsewhere. Apparent reddening of quasars and distant galaxies suggest dust at a low density throughout much of the universe. A particular motivation for its study is the possibility that it could be a significant factor in the cosmic distance ladder and interpretation of Type Ia supernova surveys.
