HEGRA

(High-Energy-Gamma-Ray Astronomy)
(1990s gamma-ray telescope array in the Canary Islands)

HEGRA (for High-Energy-Gamma-Ray Astronomy) was a Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. Its initial purpose was to detect Cherenkov radiation resulting from high energy gamma rays (in the same manner as VERITAS). It initially consisted of two ground-based telescopes, later expanded to five, and used as an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACT). It also detected energetic cosmic rays, and was adapted to improve this capability. HEGRA was in operation from 1987 to 2002, after which its successor was the MAGIC. HEGRA dishes have been reused for a similar Cherenkov detector, FACT.
