Gliese-Jahreiss Catalog
(GJ, Third Catalogue of Nearby Stars)
(1991 catalog of stars within 25 parsecs)
The name Gliese-Jahreiss Catalog (abbreviated GJ)
is commonly used for the
Third Catalogue of Nearby Stars,
a 1991 third edition of Wilhelm Gliese's
Catalog of Nearby Stars, this edition
in collaboration with Helmut Jahreiss.
It covers the 3803 stars determined to be within 25 parsecs of us.
Updates have been made since the 1991 edition.
Over time, the determined set of these stars changes as
dim stars (red dwarfs and brown dwarfs)
are discovered and as improved stellar distance determination is carried out.
The catalog's stars remain of interest because their
nearness allows better observation as new technology develops,
including hunting for and observing extra-solar planets.
