Chandra Deep Field South

The name Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-South, CDFS or CDF-S) refers to a Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) X-ray deep survey and is also used for its associated survey field, which is within the constellation Fornax. The survey was carried out with the Chandra ACIS spectrometer and eventually incorporated data from 80+ days of exposure. The resulting image reveals hundreds of distant X-ray sources, which suggest black holes, i.e., active galactic nuclei. GOODS-South and Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF) followed up surveying the same region at other wavelengths.

The Chandra Deep Field North (CDFN) is an analogous survey in the northern hemisphere covering the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) survey field.
