American Association of Variable Star Observers

(AAVSO)
(organization of amateur observers of variable stars)

The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) is an amateur astronomy organization of observers of variable stars, a crowd-sourcing effort at the collection of variable-star observation data. Established in 1911, it now consists of amateur astronomers around the world, offering information and training on such observation, and gathering and compiling resulting observation data. Among its initiatives are the AAVSO Photometric All-sky Survey (APASS) and the International Variable Star Index (VSX). It publishes a journal, the Journal of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (JAAVSO; note that the shorter abbreviation, JAVSO, is the 5-character bibcode abbreviation for the journal).
