UTMOST was the results of a substantial 2017 upgrade to MOST, the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope, a radio telescope located in Hoskinstown, Australia (near Canberra). UTMOST/MOST was retired in June 2023. The upgraded telescope's target was radio transients including pulsar observations and fast radio bursts (FRBs). MOST was a c1980 rebuilding of the 1960s Molonglo Cross Telescope. The Molonglo Cross was cross-shaped (with north-south and east-west arms), and MOST reconfigured that into twin 778-meter east-west cylindrical telescopes, 15 meters' separated. The UTMOST upgrade gave it a modern back end. A further upgrade carried out in 2020-2021 was termed UTMOST-2D, which restored its north-south arms, i.e., restored its cross shape. The terms UTMOST-NS and UTMOST-EW refer to UTMOST's arms along the north-south and east-west directions: these operated together for a period of time, but at other times, operation was just one or the other.
