UK Schmidt Survey

(UK Schmidt Southern Sky Survey, ESO/SERC Survey)
(photographic survey of the southern hemisphere sky)

I use the term UK Schmidt Survey (or UK Schmidt Southern Sky Survey or ESO/SERC Survey) for the early work of the UK Schmidt Telescope. The telescope's purpose and design were for surveys and it spent its time photographing all the sky it could reach, when done with one filter, repeating the process with another. The resulting collection of plates is the southern-hemisphere analog to the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) plates known as the Southern Sky Atlas or ESO/SERC Southern Sky Atlas, which have been used for subsequent survey efforts, creating various lists and astronomical catalogs of specific types of objects, and more recently, for the Digitized Sky Survey and SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey.
