TAIPAN
(multi-object spectrograph with robot fiber-positioner)
TAIPAN is a multi-object spectrograph with a
robotic fiber positioner for 150 fibers, on the UK Schmidt Telescope,
aimed at automated surveying of stellar and galaxy
spectrography. It began science operations in 2017.
Surveys:
- Taipan Galaxy Survey
- Funnelweb Survey (stellar spectrography)
Its fiber positioner, which uses mechanisms called StarBugs,
is a prototype for the future Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) fiber positioner, MANIFEST.
