structure formation

(formation of dark matter halos, galaxy clusters, and galaxies)

Structure formation, the development of the large scale structure aka cosmic web, is central to cosmology, is what cosmological simulations attempt to duplicate, attempting to confirm theories with the results of cosmological observation such as redshift surveys and surveys of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The term refers to the manner of the formation of dark matter halos, galaxy clusters, and galaxies. Lambda-CDM model is the model currently considered most likely and much structure formation attempts to work out its implications as well as to explore adjustments that make such a model fit observational data more closely.
