stratigraphy

(study of rock layering)

Stratigraphy is the study of how rock is layered, generally for clues regarding how it was formed and where it came from. Such layered rock is generally sedimentary or volcanic. In planetary science, besides Earth, these appear on Mars, and volcanic rock also appears on other solar system bodies. On colder bodies, there may be similar layering of material that would be liquid or gaseous at Earth temperatures, i.e., ices of various compounds, and an analogous kind of stratigraphy is relevant.
