Stellar Population

(grouping of stars according to metallicity)

A Stellar Population is a grouping of Milky Way stars based upon their Metallicity:

  • Population III Stars (Metal-free Stars) - stars with no metallicity: early and high-mass.
  • Population II Stars (Metal-poor Stars) - stars with low metallicity: next generation stars.
  • Population I Stars (Metal-rich Stars) - subsequently-formed (recent/current) stars, e.g., the Sun.

These show a qualitative Age-Metallicity Relation (AMR). A quantitative relation has been theorized, i.e., that ages could be derived from observed metallicity, but I believe this is not currently considered reliable.
