Radiolysis is a chemical reaction consisting of the breaking of a chemical bond by received ionizing radiation. The term photodissociation is used for such reactions by non-ionizing EMR: the reason for the separate term is that the high-energy photons or particles produce a different set of reactions. A common type of radiolysis of interest is breaking up water molecules. Radiolytic chemistry (i.e., radiation chemistry) is the science of chemical reactions that incorporate radiolysis, whereas radiochemistry is the science of the chemistry including radioactive elements.
