quantum efficiency

(QE)
(measure of instrument's ability to sense EMR)

Quantum efficiency (QE) is a measure of an instrument's ability to sense EMR, consisting of the percent of photons sensed/counted. For a particular instrument, it is a function of wavelength. The measure is commonly cited for CCDs, and is applicable to other EMR-sensing instruments such as photomultiplier tubes, and processes such as photography.

The term quantum efficiency also has other uses, some of which are analogous, such as for power-generating solar cells.
