detective quantum efficiency

(DQE)
(measure of instrument's ability to create images)

Detective quantum efficiency is a measure of an instrument's ability to create images, in particular the scale of detail. It incorporates its quantum efficiency, signal-to-noise ratio, and effectively, the contrast that it produces, and its spatial resolution (expressed as spatial frequency). The term is common regarding medical (X-rays) equipment, but by definition is applicable to similar astronomical equipment.
