Planck
(microwave telescope in space)
Planck is a space observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA)
designed to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB),
named in honor of physicist Max Planck.
Earlier similar missions were COBE and WMAP.
Planck was launched in 2009, and arrived at
the Earth-Sun L2 Lagrangian point in 2010,
and ceased operation in 2013.
Instruments:
- LFI "Low Frequency Instrument": 30 GHz, 44 GHz, 70 GHz (microwave)
- HFI "High Frequency Instrument": 100 GHz, 143 GHz, 217 GHz, 353 GHz, 545 GHz, 857 GHz (microwave-to-far infrared)
This range is useful for finding distant galaxy clusters.
Data from Planck, for many purposes the most reliable and detailed
data on the CMB, is commonly used in determinations of the parameters
of cosmological models, such as Lambda-CDM model.
