Centaurus A
(NGC 5128, Caldwell 77)
(nearby radio galaxy)
Centaurus A (NGC 5128 or Caldwell 77) is a nearby
radio galaxy, which is one of the Council of Giants
(12 sizable galaxies near the Local Group).
It has an AGN that has a relativistic jet. Its SMBH of about 55
million solar masses has been a target of the Event Horizon Telescope. Distance
determinations have varied, generally in the 3-4 Mpc range.
Centaurus A and its satellite galaxies comprise
the Centaurus A Subgroup of the
galaxy group, Centaurus A/M83 Group,
along with galaxy M83 (NGC 5236) and its subgroup.
