Mars 2020 (or Mars 2020 Rover)
is a NASA Mars Exploration Program mission
launched in July 2020, reaching Mars in February 2021,
landing at Jezero Crater for a two-year primary mission,
apparently already extended, with future extensions expected
until the rover is unusable.
Included is a rover similar to Curiosity named Perseverance,
which is powered by an MMRTG. Perseverance instruments:
- PIXL - Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry.
- RIMFAX - Radar Imager for Mars' subsurface experiment.
- MEDA - Mars Environment Dynamics Analyzer (meteorological).
- MOXIE - Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment: trial attempt to produce O2 from atmosphere CO2.
- SuperCam.
- Mastcam-Z.
- SHERLOC - Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals.
The mission also includes a battery-powered/solar
recharged drone/helicopter
named Ingenuity (earlier name: MHS for Mars Helicopter Scout).
Its purpose was to test the concept and technology, which it has
shown to be very workable. It continues to operate beyond its
primary mission, producing images of interest of the ground over
which it flies.
