infrared dark cloud

(molecular cloud not emitting nor transmitting infrared)

The term infrared dark cloud (IRDC) is used for regions that are clearly blocking infrared light and emitting little. Such infrared dark spots show up easily in the mid infrared from the galactic plane. Such dark regions indicate dense molecular clouds, possibly dense cores and/or star-forming regions.
