distortion

(aberration such that the image is misshapen)

Distortion is a flaw in the image (aberration) of an optical instrument such as a telescope, which does not affect the focus but changes shapes. An example of a distortion is the production of an image of an exact square that is flawed because it has curved edges rather than straight.

Two examples are pincushion distortion and barrel distortion.
