(laboratory spectroscopy of materials cooled to cryogenic temperatures)

Cryogenic spectroscopy is the spectroscopy of materials cooled to cryogenic temperatures, cryogenic generally meaning colder than -150 centigrade (i.e., 123 K). It is a laboratory technique, i.e., using cryogenic cooling devices. The practice is useful in planetary science for modeling the spectroscopy of solar system bodies (planets and moons) which are at such temperatures. In other sciences, the practice has been used to slow or halt some chemical processes to assist in researching details of the processes.
