data folding

(epoch folding)
(locating periods in data by trial)

Data folding (epoch folding) is a technique used in analysis of transient sources to identify periodicity. Given some data measurements taken at points in time, and given some period, the data values are mapped from its phase (according to that period) to see if the data has a periodic component. Phase dispersion minimization is a method of evaluating a potential period. Data folding is potentially of use for finding the periodicity and associated period of any transient phenomena which has such a stable period, such as those based upon the rotation of something, such as a pulsar.
