WSA-Enlil

(computer model of heliosphere for space weather prediction)

WSA-Enlil is software to model the heliosphere for space weather prediction. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) runs it operationally using observational data, posting data and predictions online, analogous to the way it runs Earth numerical weather prediction models to give us weather forecasts. WSA-Enlil is a combination of two models: the WSA model developed in the 1980s-1990s to model activity of the corona using observational data, feeding its output data into the Enlil model, an MHD-based model to model solar wind outward from around 20-30 solar radii. "WSA" is for Wang-Sheeley-Arge (three WSA developers) and "Enlil" is an ancient Mesopotamian god of weather.
