Wide-field Multi-object Spectrograph

(proposed instrument to detect baryon acoustic oscillations)

The Wide-field Multi-object Spectrograph (WFMOS) was a proposed instrument for research in cosmology. It aimed to identify many distant galaxies with information about their positions, under the assumption that this would show a tendency for galaxies to be found 150 parsecs distant from each other, a signature of baryon acoustic oscillations.

The WFMOS was intended for one of the Gemini Observatory telescopes and later the Subaru Telescope and a new plan (the Subaru PFS spectrograph) is aimed at its niche.
