A UVJ diagram is a color-color diagram used to identify star formation in galaxies within a range of distances: star forming galaxies are made evident by their distinct position on the diagram. The passband indicators U, V, and J (infrared) are not for the observed magnitudes; they identify the rest wavelengths emitted by the galaxies rather than the observed wavelengths. Given the redshifts, obtaining them is non-trivial: observations provide raw data and the three rest-wavelength magnitudes must be recovered through analysis.
