A synthetic spectrum is a spectrum created by a model, e.g., a model of a stellar photosphere. The common application is stellar spectra, but spectra can be synthesized for other objects, e.g., galaxies, clouds of a type of interest, and objects within environments of interest. Such spectra are produced to compare with observed spectra of astronomical objects, to deduce characteristics of the object and validity of models. Such spectra can also be used in synthetic photometry.
