strewn field

(strewn-field, strewnfield)
(region with fragments of a meteor impact)

A strewn field is a region with the resulting fragments from a single meteorite fall, the result of one meteoroid breaking up, either in the atmosphere or on impact with the ground. A strewn field generally has an oval shape, the direction of the long dimension indicating the horizontal direction of the meteor's trajectory. Example: the Gold Basin meteorite strewn field in the Arizona portion of the Mojave Desert. In addition to Earth, strewn fields have also been identified on the Moon, Mars, and Mercury.
