A superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) is a type of EMR sensor that makes use of a particular kind of quantum tunneling (photon-assisted tunneling, PAT) and can be used to detect over a wide frequency range: ultraviolet to X-rays, essentially a kind of bolometer. The device needs to be cryogenically cooled for the superconductivity. A common type uses a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junction, a configuration fitting that description with an extremely thin insulator. Often, the entire sensor is referred to as an SIS.
