STAR-X

(Survey and Time-domain Astrophysical Research Explorer)
(plan for a future X-ray space telescope)

STAR-X (for Survey and Time-domain Astrophysical Research Explorer) is a plan for a NASA MIDEX (Medium-class Explorers Program) mission consisting of a soft X-ray telescope with a 1 square degree field of view, capable of observing X-ray transients, presuming launch in the 2020s. An initiative produced the concept, which as of 2023 is being promoted for 2024 selection for a late 2020s mission. Regardless, some future X-ray telescope may well borrow or build on the ideas developed.
