Specific volume is the ratio of volume to mass, the reciprocal of density.

ν = V/m = ρ-1

A way to put it is specific volume is the volume that is holding some specific amount of mass. Among the units used for specific volume are m3/kg, and cm3/g. Specific volume is commonly symbolized by nu (ν).
