solar particle event

(SPE, solar proton event)
(episode of higher velocity solar wind)

A solar particle event (or solar proton event, SPE) is a space-weather episode of the Sun producing a higher-velocity solar wind which can be caused, for example by a coronal mass ejection or solar flare. It can give protons a velocity making them dangerous to spacecraft and humans in space, and can produce a proton aurora.
