solar neighborhood
(Milky Way in the vicinity of the Sun)
The phrase solar neighborhood, meaning the vicinity of space
near the solar system is used informally and in research
papers. It generally is meant to include nearby stars, clouds
and other interstellar medium, possibly meaning a tiny part of the Milky Way
and possibly meaning a more substantial portion, e.g., 5%. A
research paper is likely to cite its criteria which could be as
small as 10 parsecs radius to 1000 parsecs or more.
