Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope

(SEST)
(former 15 m radio telescope array in Chile)

The Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST) was a 15-meter millimeter/submillimeter telescope in operation from 1987 to 2003 at La Silla Observatory in Chile. At the beginning of its life, it was the largest submillimeter telescope in the southern hemisphere. When it was decommissioned, its bolometer array, SIMBA was used to test Atacama Pathfinder Experiment, which was in development.

The dish still exists and there are plans to relocate and recommission it as the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT) on Gamsberg mount in Namibia. A motivation is to serve as another VLBI receiver, in particular as part of the Event Horizon Telescope.
