Orphan stream

(stellar stream wrapping around the Milky Way)

The Orphan Stream is a stellar stream in the Milky Way halo (analogous to the Virgo Stellar Stream). It was discovered in 2006 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. Such streams are typically associated with a galaxy (e.g., dwarf galaxy), globular cluster or similar structure, but none is known for the Orphan Stream, thus its name. It stretches at least 90° across the sky.
