Orbiting Astronomical Observatory
(OAO)
(series of 1960s-1970s NASA space telescopes)
The name Orbiting Astronomical Observatory
(OAO) was used for four NASA
space telescopes launched in the 1960s and 1970s.
Two of them failed before observing, OAO-1 and OAO-B.
OAO-2, named Stargazer, was operational
1969-1973, hosting a number of ultraviolet (UV)
telescopes (one set of them named the Celescope)
and was the first successful space telescope.
OAO-3, named Copernicus, was operational from
1972-1981, hosting both UV and X-ray telescopes.
