NGC 6946

(Fireworks Galaxy, Caldwell 12)
(face-on spiral galaxy)

NGC 6946 is a spiral galaxy about 25 million light-years' distant. It has the nickname Fireworks Galaxy because of the high number of supernovae that have been found in it. It is an intermediate spiral galaxy (galaxy classification SAB), indicating it has a bar-like structure but not sufficiently defined to term the galaxy barred. It is oriented so that the disk and spiral are observable.
