NEAR Shoemaker (aka Discovery 1, originally NEAR for Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) was a NASA mission to the asteroid Eros launched in 1996, which began orbiting Eros in 2000, continuing operation until shortly after landing on the asteroid in 2001. Instruments:
