MRO Interferometer
(MROI, Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer)
(optical interferometer in New Mexico)
The MRO Interferometer (MROI) is an optical interferometer
under construction at Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO in New
Mexico. It will incorporate ten 1.4-meter telescopes, movable to
any of 27 stations positioned in a Y shape, allowing baselines up
to 340 meters. Light will be piped to a Beam Combining Area
(BCA) where the interference will be carried out. The goal
is optical aperture synthesis. The BCA and the
mechanism to transfer the light to it were worked out, then the
first telescope was installed in 2018, and installation of a
second telescope began in 2023.
