MIRI

(Mid-Infrared Instrument)
(mid-infrared imager and spectrograph on JWST)

MIRI (for Mid-infrared Instrument) is a spectrograph and imager on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) a wavelength-range of roughly 5 to 28 μm. The imager (MIRIM) has a number of filters, and a choice of two coronagraphs. Included are two spectrograph modes, "low" and "medium", with spectral resolutions up to 3250. It is capable of functioning as a multi-object spectrograph or an integral field spectrograph (i.e., it includes an optional an IFU). Filters include F560W, F770W, F1000W, F1130W, F1280W, F1500W, F1800W, F2100W, F2550W, F2550WR, FND, F1065C, F1140C, F1550C, and F2300C, with "W" for wide, and "C" for coronagraph. "FND" is for "Filter Neutral Density", which attenuates the signal across the wavelength range, to be used when targets are or might be very bright.
