magnesium lines
(Mg lines)
(spectral lines specific to magnesium)
Magnesium absorption lines are detected in the interstellar medium (ISM),
including in distant galaxies, in some clouds formed
within the ISM, and in stars. Among the lines:
- Mg II doublet consisting of lines at 2795 Å and 2802 Å.
- Mg II doublet consisting of lines at 1239 Å and 1240 Å.
- Mg I line at 2852 Å.
Some are used to determine the kinematics of gas
clouds through analysis of the spectral line shape.
