Massive Cluster Survey

(MACS)
(survey of distant clusters evident in ROSAT X-ray data)

The Massive Cluster Survey (MACS) is a survey of distant galaxy clusters found by spotting cluster-candidates by their tell-tale X-ray emissions of their intracluster medium within ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) data. The clusters were confirmed and observed using a number of Mauna Kea Observatories telescopes.

A southern extension to MACS has confirmed and observed some cluster candidates that are too far south for observation from Hawaii, using southern-hemisphere telescopes. The designator SMACS has been used for these.
