M87*

(SMBH at the center of galaxy M87)

M87* is the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of the galaxy, M87. The black hole is active, i.e., accretion is taking place and M87 is considered an active galaxy, and the black hole shows jets. Its mass is on the order of a billion MSun. It is an observation target of the Event Horizon Telescope and has been successfully imaged, revealing its black hole shadow, which shows a size consistent with a black hole mass of 6.5×109 MSun.
