Messier 81

(M81, NGC 3031, Bode's Galaxy)
(easily-observed spiral galaxy)

Messier 81 (M81 or NGC 3031) is a spiral galaxy about 12 million light-years' distant. It is classified as a grand design spiral galaxy, showing a very clear spiral structure. It is of research interest for being close by, with a sizable supermassive black hole (about 70 million MSun) that is active. It is within the Local Sheet, which includes the Local Group and nearby galaxies, and is among the twelve nearby sizeable local-sheet galaxies that have been called the Council of Giants. Novae are observed in M81, but only one supernova has been identified.
