lenticular galaxy

(S0, S0 galaxy)
(disk galaxy that has no spirals)

A lenticular galaxy is a disk galaxy (shaped like a disk) that has no spiral arms, i.e., that is not a spiral galaxy. The word lenticular means "shaped like a lens" (which is like a lentil). The Hubble galaxy classification S0 indicates a lenticular galaxy, which are sometimes referred to as S0 galaxies. They often have a substantial central bulge. Their typical properties are much like elliptical galaxies: substantial cosmic dust, limited star formation, and aging stars.
