kinemetry

(method of determining galaxy kinematics through photometry)

The term kinemetry has been used in astrophysics for a method of determining the radial velocity component of a distant galaxy's kinematics using photometric data. Given some observed consistencies in the kinematic patterns of galaxies in general, velocities over the three dimensions of the galaxy can be determined from two-dimensional photometric data.

The name kinemetry is also used for a computer program that carries out the method.
