Jeans equations

(relating the motion of stars to the surrounding gravitational field)

The Jeans equations relate the motion and density of stars to the surrounding gravitational field and can be used to make a determination of the mass of galaxies and such groups of gravitationally-bound stars. This method is sometimes called determining the mass through Jeans modeling.
