International Ultraviolet Explorer
(IUE, Explorer 57, SAS-D)
(1980s ultraviolet space telescope)
The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE)
was a 45-cm space-based ultraviolet telescope
launched in 1978 into Earth orbit and operated until 1996.
Among the organizations collaborating
were NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA).
Instruments:
- SWS - "Short Wavelength Spectrograph" (115-200 nm).
- LWS - "Long Wavelength Spectrograph" (185-330 nm).
- LWP - "Long Wavelength Prime" camera.
- SWP - "Short Wavelength Prime" camera.
- LWR - "Short Wavelength Redundant" camera.
- SWR - "Short Wavelength Redundant" camera.
Among its activities were follow-up UV studies of SN 1987A.
IUEDAC (for IUE Data Analysis Center) was a clearing house
for IUE data, a function which has been subsumed by MAST.
